Types of Loft Conversions
There are typically four types of loft conversions homeowners can choose from. Not every type is compatible with every home and budget, so Heathgate will advise you on which is best for your house.
- Dormer Extensions – The most popular extension, dormers can be built onto almost any sloping roof. Their addition will typically flatten your roof and provide decent floor space and headroom.
- Mansard Extensions – Suitable for terraced, semi-detached, and detached houses, Mansard conversions run the whole length of your house’s roof. They require the most work, but can usually be built without planning permission.
- Roof Lights – If you already have a big loft, adding a skylight window to make the room habitable is a cost-effective solution. You may also have to put in flooring and add a staircase to make the loft a proper room, but this wouldn’t require an extension.
- Hip to Gable Conversion – Hip to gable conversions only work for detached and semi-detached houses, since they require a free sloping side roof. They extend the side of your property outwards to create more loft space.
